Yes.

They also offer other types of hosting plans including regular shared hosting plans or hosting plans for Joomla among other things.  The point is, do not become confused if you visit their site and find many options.  We only review their managed WordPress hosting solution which they call “WordPress Hosting”

Yes.

They do offer managed WordPress hosting services.  In fact, their service might better be described as Premium managed WordPress hosting services both due to their price points and target markets and also for the mostly full service solutions they offer including 1 click staging, some of the faster servers in the managed WordPress hosting arena, and close attention to backups and security.

WP Engine does offer a migration service, which is managed through a third party.  It runs for about $300.

They do offer a guide to migrating your own site in the form of several very well crafted blog articles.  The guides are solid and anyone that has moved a site, worked with a DNS propagation or WordPress in general can probably manage them.  But unlike some competitors they do not offer either a free migration or free migration tool.

Sometimes.

WP Engine offers a free CDN on Professional and higher plans that start out at $99 per month.

The WP Engine Personal plan that starts at $29.95 does not include a free CDN.  A CDN purchased via WP Engine can be added on for $19.95 per month.

TIP! Buy the CDN right away if images in search engines are important to your site. If you think there is a remote possibility that you may need a CDN for images, for example, then it is highly advisable that you purchase it when you launch your account with WP Engine.  If your images are indexed through search engines like Google Images and they identify the original file location url, its very difficult if not impossible to get the search engines to remove those images later when they are alternatively served up via a CDN.  This has led to additional overage charges on WP Engine in the past.

They can be purchased via Pressable for $10 per month per site that has an SSL.

Ex.

Jennifer has 3 sites on a 1-5 site plan at Pressable.

2 of Jennifer’s 3 sites requires an SSL ( 2 sites are ecommerce sites and the 3rd site is simply a blog that sells nothing and requires no user sign ups)

Each month Jennifer would pay $25 for the hosting plan (1-5 site level plan) + $10 x 2 for the SSL = $45 / month

Yes.

They do offer managed WordPress hosting services.  Based on our testing, Lightning Base is very fast and fast is one of the cornerstones of Managed WordPress hosting.  They optimize their servers so you don’t have to futz with a bunch of cache plugins and other garbage.

Lightning Base doesn’t offer a lot of other services however such as 1 Click staging, email, multiple user access etc.  That may or may not be important, but the speed is there!  🙂

Yes.

Lightning Base offers a free CDN (Content Delivery Network) on all plans.  The storage level varies for each plan.

  • Personal Plan – 20 GB
  • Small Plan – 50 GB
  • Medium Plan – 200 GB
  • Large Plan – 500 GB

Notice the pattern in their numbers, 20, 50, 200, 500.  We get the impression that with many of their prices, levels, numbers in general, that this is a no (marketing) nonsense kind of company.  Its easy to remember their numbers and understand where your account fits in their different levels.  You won’t be hassled or troubled with a bunch of upsell, cross selling malarchy or shenanigans with Lightning Base!

Compared to some hosts, Lightning Base is a very refreshing experience.

We know its weird and good.  Rumor has it that they purchased Media Temple and are incorporating cool stuff from Media Temple as core ‘new’ services at Godaddy.
